Welcome to the VA-142 Radio Control and UAV page! Aerospace Education is one of the primary and ongoing functions of the Civil Air Patrol. It is one of the stated directives in the organization’s charter. As such VA-142 is providing and developing projects to support this important component of the CAP Mission for our cadets and senior members.
Currently VA-142 is utilizing a Flyzone Calypso power glider. This asset was obtained by the unit as part of the Civil Air Patrol STEM Kit program. It is a central part of our Aerospace Education program. The kit included a RTF (Ready to Fly) Flyzone Calypso glider and a Real Planes R/C aircraft simulator. The simulator is invaluable as it allows cadets and senior members to learn about R/C flight before trying the real thing.
VA-142 has received its Quadcopter STEM Kit. Below the videos is a photo while the kit was in the early stages of its build. This kit will give experience in building as well as flying a UAV. This will be a unique experience for the majority of our members. We appreciate the opportunity to learn more about this burgeoning technology. As with the glider photos and videos of the unit utilizing this kit will soon follow.
While working on our Quadcopter STEM Kit we became interested in how much extra weight we could lift. Members were able to take various equations and calculate the Theoretical Lift that the quadcopter can produce. We have turned these formulas into a online calculator which we hope will be helpful to you in the build of your sUAS'. The calculator can be found by clicking here.
